Investigators are now trying to establish the cause of a fire that sank 48-metre luxury charter yacht Lady MM off the coast of Sardinia, Italy, last week.
Italian news agency ANSA reports that the superyacht, which was flying a Cayman Islands flag, was en route from Capri to Sardinia and was around 50 nautical miles from Capo Comino when the fire began on the morning of August 25.
A total of nine crew and eight Kazakh tourists aboard had all safely evacuated onto a rescue dinghy by the time two coastguard launches arrived.
Dramatic footage captured by a Sardinian coastguard helicopter shows flames engulfing the yacht, which was reduced to a shell and eventually sank as a result of damage caused in the 12-hour blaze.
Lady MM was launched by ISA in 2003, and was originally named April Fool. She had undergone multiple refits and was used by various owners for both charter and cruising.
